How to Stand out at a Career Fair

How to Stand out at a Career Fair

I recently went to a Career Fair with a friend that was in the “I am so desperate for a job that I am applying for anything” mode. I stopped him and said that is not that best way to go about this. You need to go in there and be professional.  He wanted to know how I can be so cool, calm, collect about going in and I said “just treat it like an interview” where I follow the same steps and use a few pointers that a career coach gave me not that long ago:

Before you go:

- Find out which employers that are going to be there (they should be posted on the website)
- Research what the employers  are looking for
- Know what you are looking for (Don’t be my friend, J)
- Print copies of your resume and protect them from stains and bends
- Dress like you are going to an interview
- Create an ‘elevator speech’
- Practise, Practise, Practise!

When you get there:

- Arrive early so you have a chance to see the employer that you most want to see
- After you see the employers that you really want to meet, go back and talk to the others
- Keep an open mind!
- Take notes on who you meet and the companies that they work for and when is a good chance to do a follow up with them
- Use your time well. If you are standing and waiting in line, try listening to what the people in front of you are asking and what the employer says
- Greet the employer, smile, be friendly. Don’t be my friend J, who just went over and handed the employer his resume. This is the time for you to shine!
- Ask them what the next step is in the hiring process. It shows that you are seriously interested in working for that company
- Collect business cards
After the Career Fair:
- Send a “Thank You” Note or email to the employer from the contact you made and from the business cards that you picked up
- After you get a response from the employer, try to keep in touch

The Office Christmas Party

The Office Christmas Party

Whether you are attending your office’s holiday party, or going to a party as someone’s guest, maintaining a good impression is very important!  Here are a few tips to follow when attending the various parties this holiday season:

· If you are consuming alcohol, drink in moderation.  A good rule of thumb is a two drink maximum; this allows you to have a good time without getting out of hand. If you feel pressured to be drinking, have a soda instead of an alcoholic beverage in your hand - no one will be able to tell the difference.

· Ensure you are being social and mingling, making an effort to speak to as many people as you can. When you are speaking with co-workers, avoid talking strictly about work. You have a life outside of work and this is a great opportunity to share stories or talk about hobbies and common interests.

· Dress appropriately for the event, wearing an outfit that suits its formality. Ensure your clothing is not too revealing and not too casual. Note:  a “festive” themed party is not one where you wear tacky bows on a sweater; it actually means wearing Christmas-themed colours.

· If you are bringing a guest, make sure you discuss the importance of leaving a good impression, as your guest’s behavior reflects back on you. This also applies when you are a guest; don’t drink too much or conduct yourself inappropriately.

· Preplan for the entire evening. Plan your way home; arrange for a cab to pick you up, organize a designated driver or drive yourself home if you have committed to not drinking. You should also have cash on hand, as some parties are not open bar and you will need to purchase drinks.

· If your company’s Christmas party is being held on a weekday, get everything you need ready for the next day as it might be a late night. Also, make sure you show up to work the next day or people might assume you are absent because you over-indulged at the party.

· Remember, the party has been organized and is being held for your benefit - don’t be a scrooge! Have a good time and make sure to thank those in charge of organizing and hosting the event.

These tips will make it easy for you to have fun this holiday season while still remaining professional and giving off a great impression – remember, what happens at the Christmas party does not necessarily stay at the Christmas party!
